Yo kiddies,
I hope you enjoyed reading the interview with Tom Kennedy. (If'n you haven't, do it now!) insert hyperlink here Since I was doing the interview, I thought I would do a transcription as well. Lemme tell ya, I shoulda picked a tune that wasn't clippin' along at 280 BPM. My drum machine can't even play that fast. Five measures into this project and I knew I was going to need (insert your favorite slow downer here). Doing this transcription was a lot of work but it was also a great learning experience. What was really cool was the fact that I had about 20 bars done before the show (oh yeah, Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy and Dave Weckl) and during Tom's solo he actually broke into "Softly" and starting playing some of the licks I'd been working on. It was great to see how he played the passages up close. (oh yeah, I was standing belly-up to the stage right in front of Tom).
About the tune. I think of "Softly" as a 32 bar blues with a bridge following the very common AABA form. I've seen a lot of different changes for this tune, none of them the same. So, I've selected the chords that I think most represent what is going on in the transcription. I could be wrong. I'll have to ask Tom.
Now, get yer bass, a nice comfy chair with a seat belt and get to sheddin'!
